Typical Artificial Turf Prices in Albuquerque

Most residential lawns we install in Albuquerque land between $10 and $16 per square foot all-in. That covers removal, base, weed barrier, turf, infill and labor. Specialty jobs cost more because they use different materials and take more time.

Project typeTypical installed priceWhat's included
Front or backyard lawn$10 to $16 per sq ftRemoval, compacted base, weed barrier, turf, infill
Pet turf and dog runs$11 to $17 per sq ftFully permeable backing, antimicrobial infill, extra base prep for drainage
Play areas with padding$14 to $20 per sq ftPadded underlayment under the turf for fall protection
Putting greens$18 to $30 per sq ftShaped base, putting surface, cups, fringe turf

These are typical ranges, not quotes. Your real number comes from a free on-site measure and a written quote. The price in that quote is the price you pay.

What Drives the Cost of a Turf Install

  • Size and minimums. Larger areas usually cost less per square foot. Small jobs carry a minimum so the trip, crew and equipment make sense.
  • Removing what's there. Hauling off old grass and roots is standard. Thick gravel, landscape rock or old concrete takes more labor and more dump fees.
  • Access. A wide side gate lets us bring in equipment. A backyard reached only through the house or a narrow path means more hand work.
  • Base depth. We use 3 to 4 inches of crushed base, compacted in lifts. Soft or sandy soil, or areas that hold water, may need more.
  • Turf grade. Heavier, denser turf with heat-resistant fibers costs more per roll than a thin budget product.
  • Infill type. Silica sand is the standard. Antimicrobial and cooling infills cost more but help with pet odor and surface heat.
  • Edging. Long runs of bender board or curved borders add material and time.
  • Padding. Shock pads under play areas add a full extra layer.
  • Slopes. Hillsides need more grading, more anchoring and careful drainage planning.

Our Install Process

Every job follows the same steps. We remove old grass, gravel and roots. We grade the area so water runs away from your house and set the edges. We lay 3 to 4 inches of crushed base and plate-compact it in lifts. Then we put down weed barrier, roll out the turf, and glue and nail the seams. Last, we spread infill and power brush the fibers upright. Most yards take 1 to 3 days. See how this applies to a full yard on our artificial grass lawns in Albuquerque page.

Materials and How They Affect Price

The base is where cheap installs cut corners, and it is the main reason turf fails here. Turf quality matters too. We use heat-resistant turf rated for high UV, with up to a 15-year manufacturer warranty on premium products. For dogs, a fully permeable backing lets urine drain straight through. If you have pets, our pet turf and dog run installs page covers those options in detail.

Built for Albuquerque Heat, Wind and Monsoon Drainage

Albuquerque sits above 5,000 feet, so UV is strong and turf needs fibers made to resist fading. Any turf gets warm in direct summer sun. Cooling infill and heat-reflective fibers help, and a quick rinse cools it fast.

Monsoon storms can drop a lot of rain in a short time. A properly sloped, compacted base moves that water through the turf and away from your foundation instead of pooling. Spring wind blows dust and grit into the fibers, so plan on an occasional rinse and brushing. These details are part of the base work you pay for, and they are why the base matters more than the grass.

Water Savings vs. Grass in Albuquerque

A cool-season lawn in Albuquerque needs roughly 1 to 1.5 inches of water a week in summer. Here is a simple example with our assumptions stated.

  • Lawn size: 1,000 sq ft
  • Watering: about 1.25 inches a week for 30 weeks, April through October
  • One inch of water over one square foot is about 0.62 gallons
  • Total: about 23,000 gallons a season, or about 31 billing units (1 unit = 748 gallons)
  • ABCWUA residential water commodity rate: about $2.31 per unit (approximate, effective July 2024; check your bill for the current rate)

That works out to roughly $70 a season in water commodity charges for 1,000 sq ft. Your savings can be higher. ABCWUA adds a summer conservation surcharge when April to October use runs well above your winter average, and sprinklers often put down more water than the lawn actually needs. Turf still needs an occasional rinse, so savings are not 100 percent.

To be plain: water savings alone take a long time to pay back the cost of turf. Most people switch because they want a green yard without mowing, fertilizing, fixing sprinklers or tracking mud inside.

Does the ABCWUA Xeriscape Rebate Cover Artificial Turf?

No. The Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority's xeriscape rebate does not pay for artificial turf. The Water Authority's conservation staff have said directly that replacing a lawn with gravel or artificial turf does not qualify, because the grass has to be replaced with approved plants.

What does qualify, per the ABCWUA xeriscape conversion rebate page:

  • Up to $3.00 per square foot (verify current amount with ABCWUA) of high water use grass that is converted
  • The grass must currently be watered by spray irrigation, and the water must come from the Water Authority
  • At least 50 percent of the rebate area must be covered by plants from the Xeriscaping Guide list, measured at maturity
  • At least 3 inches of mulch between plants, and spray irrigation converted to drip or bubblers
  • You must apply online and get a Notice to Proceed before any removal starts. Projects already started are not eligible, and rebates are limited to available funds

Some homeowners split the yard: one part converted to rebate-eligible xeriscape, and a separate area in turf for kids or dogs. If you plan to do that, apply with ABCWUA before we remove anything, and keep the two areas separate on your plan.

FAQ

Turf Cost Questions

How much does artificial turf cost per square foot in Albuquerque?

Most residential lawns run $10 to $16 per square foot all-in, including removal, base, turf, infill and labor. Pet turf, padded play areas and putting greens cost more. Your free written quote gives the exact price.

Is there a minimum job size?

Yes. Small jobs carry a minimum so the trip, crew and equipment make sense. Very small areas often cost more per square foot than a full yard.

Why do turf quotes vary so much between installers?

Most of the difference is in the base. A thin or poorly compacted base is cheaper up front but leads to dips, wrinkles and drainage problems. Ask every installer how deep their base is and how they compact it.

Can I get the ABCWUA rebate for artificial turf?

No. ABCWUA's xeriscape rebate requires grass to be replaced with approved plants covering at least half the area at maturity. Artificial turf and gravel alone do not qualify. A separate area converted to plants and drip irrigation may qualify if you apply before removal.

How long does installation take?

Most yards take 1 to 3 days. Large areas, tight access, slopes and putting greens can take longer. Your written quote includes a schedule.

What warranty comes with the price?

Premium turf carries up to a 15-year manufacturer warranty, and every install we build includes a 2-year workmanship guarantee.
