Why Albuquerque Homeowners Replace Their Lawns
Natural grass in Albuquerque is a fight. Summer sun burns it, spring wind dries it out, and keeping it green takes a lot of water in a city that gets very little rain most of the year. Many yards end up as bare dirt or patchy gravel that blows into the house.
Artificial grass gives you a lawn that looks the same in August as it does in May. No mowing, no fertilizer, no sprinkler repairs, and no mud after a storm. You still get a soft place for kids to sit, a spot to throw a ball, and a green view from the kitchen window.
Front Yards and Back Yards Need Different Things
Front yard lawns
A front lawn is mostly about looks and low upkeep. We usually suggest a medium pile with a mix of green and tan fibers so it reads as real grass from the street. Clean borders matter here: turf edges set against rock, flagstone, concrete or desert plantings make the whole yard look finished. If you live in an HOA, many associations require design approval before you change a front yard, so we give you a written scope and product details you can submit.
Back yard lawns
Back yards get used harder. Kids, dogs, patio furniture and grills all put wear on the turf. Here we lean toward denser, more resilient fibers that spring back after foot traffic. If dogs use the yard, we can switch to fully permeable backing and odor-control infill, the same build we use for pet turf and dog runs. Some homeowners also add a short practice area, which we cover on our backyard putting greens page.
What Goes Into an Artificial Grass Lawn
The turf you walk on is only one layer. A lawn that lasts is built from the ground up.
- Turf fibers. Most landscape turf uses polyethylene blades, which feel soft and look natural. Some products blend in nylon for extra wear resistance. A curly polypropylene thatch layer near the base helps the blades stand up and adds a lived-in look. Blade shapes such as W, C or ridged profiles help the fibers bounce back and reduce glare.
- Pile height and density. Lawns usually run from about 1.25 to 2 inches tall. Taller pile looks lush but can mat down in traffic areas. Denser turf holds up better and needs less infill to stay upright.
- Backing. Standard backing has drainage holes punched every few inches. Fully permeable backing lets water pass through the entire surface and is the better choice for dogs or low spots.
- Infill. Silica sand or coated sand is brushed into the fibers. It weighs the turf down, protects the backing from sun, and helps the blades stand. Cooling infills that hold a little moisture are an option for full-sun yards.
- Base. Under everything is 3 to 4 inches of crushed base rock, compacted in layers, with a weed barrier on top. This is what keeps the lawn flat and draining for years.
How We Install an Artificial Lawn
- Free on-site measure. We measure the area, look at slopes, soil, sprinkler lines and access, and give you a written quote.
- Remove the old surface. Dead grass, gravel, roots and soil are dug out and hauled away so the new base sits at the right depth.
- Cap irrigation. Sprinkler heads in the turf area are capped so they don't leak under the lawn, while drip lines to nearby trees and beds stay on.
- Grade and edge. We shape the ground so water runs away from your foundation and set bender board or another border to hold the edges.
- Build the base. Crushed base goes down in lifts and is plate-compacted until it is firm and smooth.
- Lay the turf. Weed barrier first, then the turf rolled out with all the grain running the same way. Seams are glued and nailed, and edges are secured.
- Infill and brush. Infill is spread and power brushed in so the fibers stand up. We clean up and walk the yard with you.
Most lawns are done in 1 to 3 days. Large yards, tight access or heavy rock removal can add time, and we tell you that up front.
Drainage and Heat in the High Desert
Albuquerque sits above 5,000 feet, and the thinner air lets more UV reach the ground than at sea level. Cheap turf fades and gets brittle under that sun. We use turf made with UV stabilizers and backed by manufacturer warranties of up to 15 years.
Heat. Any surface in full summer sun gets hot, including turf, pavers and gravel. Lighter fiber colors, heat-reflective fibers and cooling infill help, and a quick rinse cools the surface fast. Trees, shade sails and a covered patio next to the lawn make a real difference in July.
Monsoon storms. Summer storms can drop a lot of rain in a short time. Punched backing typically drains around 30 inches per hour, and fully permeable backing drains much faster, but the turf can only drain as well as the base below it. That is why we grade the base and plan where the water goes once it gets through.
Caliche and sandy soil. Many parts of the metro have caliche, a hard, cemented layer that water barely moves through. If we hit it, we break through or route water to a spot that can take it, instead of letting it pool under the turf. Sandy soils, common on the West Side and in Rio Rancho, drain well but shift, so compaction matters even more.
Wind. Spring wind can lift loose edges and pile dust and debris on the lawn. Secured edges, nailed seams and a full layer of infill keep the turf down, and a leaf blower clears the dust.
What an Artificial Lawn Costs
Most residential lawns land between $10 and $16 per square foot all-in, which covers removal, base, turf, infill and cleanup. Where you fall in that range depends on the turf you choose, the size of the yard, how much material has to come out and how easy it is to get equipment in. Our Albuquerque artificial turf cost guide breaks this down further.
Keeping It Looking New
Upkeep is light. Blow off leaves and dust, rinse it now and then in summer, and cross-brush high-traffic spots so the fibers stand back up. Every year or two, a deep clean and infill top-up keeps it looking fresh. If an older lawn is matted or has lifting seams, see our turf cleaning and repair service. Every install comes with a 2-year workmanship guarantee.

Artificial Grass Lawns Questions
How long does artificial grass last in Albuquerque?
Quality turf installed on a good base commonly lasts 10 to 15 years or more here. The biggest factors are UV exposure, foot traffic and upkeep. The turf we install carries a manufacturer warranty of up to 15 years.
Does artificial grass get hot in the summer?
Yes, it can get hot in direct afternoon sun, like most outdoor surfaces. Lighter or heat-reflective fibers, cooling infill and shade all help. Rinsing it for a minute cools the surface quickly.
Will weeds grow through artificial grass?
Very few. We remove the old soil and roots, compact a rock base and lay a weed barrier before the turf. An occasional weed can sprout from seeds that blow into the infill, and those pull out easily.
Can you install artificial grass over my existing dirt or gravel?
We don't lay turf directly on dirt or loose gravel. We dig out the top layer, then build a compacted crushed base so the lawn stays flat and drains. Laying turf on dirt is the most common reason a lawn gets lumpy or holds water.
Do I need HOA approval for an artificial lawn?
Many Albuquerque-area HOAs require approval for front yard changes, and some have rules about turf color or how much of the yard can be turf. Check with your association first. We can give you product specs and a written scope to submit.
What happens to my sprinkler system?
We cap the sprinkler heads inside the turf area. Drip lines that water trees, shrubs and planters around the lawn can stay in place and keep running.
